Trump Taps Sydney Sweeney as New Press Secretary, Pledges “Nothing but Policy”
WASHINGTON — President Trump announced that actress Sydney Sweeney will serve as White House Press Secretary. In her first briefing, Sweeney appeared at the podium holding only two binders and stated that the administration would offer “nothing but policy.”
“We’re going to stick to the facts,” Sweeney said, reading from the binder. “Trade numbers, border crossings, and the schedule. Nothing else.” She then listed three items, closed the binder, and waited.
The press corps did not ask questions. Reporters remained in their seats for the duration of the briefing. Several adjusted camera angles. One correspondent stopped mid-sentence and set his pen down. After the prepared remarks ended, the room stayed quiet until Sweeney left the podium.
A White House official said the approach had been intentional. “She wanted the focus on the material,” the official said. “Just the binder. Just the policy. The rest is up to the room.”
Members of the press corps offered no on-record comment. One reporter, speaking on background, described the session as “unusually direct.” Another noted that planned questions on personnel and prior statements were not raised. Network producers later shortened coverage of the appointment.
The White House said subsequent briefings will follow the same format. A schedule posted Monday lists Sweeney’s next appearance for Thursday and confirms that the podium and binder will again be the only items provided. Officials added that questions will be accepted if any are submitted.
