Biblical Scholars Now Conclude Eve Answered “Not to My Knowledge” When Asked About the Fruit

Scholars reviewing early textual traditions now conclude that Eve responded “not to my knowledge” when asked whether she had eaten from the tree in the garden.

The finding appears in a paper published this week. Researchers cite fragmentary sources in which her reply takes the form of a denial of present awareness rather than a direct statement of events. They note that the exchange in Genesis does not record every question put to her or every answer given.

“The wording is limited to what she said she knew at the moment she was asked,” one author said. “It does not address other relationships or earlier actions that may have been relevant.”

The scholars observed that the same qualified response appears more than once in the reconstructed dialogue. In several instances Eve declined to expand on the identity of the one who had offered the fruit or on the precise nature of their connection. The paper describes these repetitions as consistent with a pattern of answers that neither confirm nor deny the underlying facts.

Theologians outside the study said the additional phrasing does not change the recorded consequences. The departure from the garden proceeded after the questions ended. One commentator noted that later readers have sometimes treated the reply as conclusive while others have treated it as incomplete.

The paper does not examine parallel statements in the same chapter. Researchers said those lines involve a different speaker and remain outside the present review. They added that further fragments, if located, will be assessed under the same standard.
