COLUMBUS, OH—Health officials in Ohio have warned pregnant women to avoid smoking their now-legal weed before getting a legal abortion because it may be harmful to the fetus.

“We want to make sure the fetus is perfectly healthy when it’s brutally killed in the abortion,” Ohio Health Secretary Jerry Lucifer said.

Ohio voters passed propositions to legalize marijuana and abortion yesterday prompting the warning.

No amount of marijuana has been proven safe to use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. In 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics released its first official guidelines.

Whether smoked, eaten in food (edibles), or vaped, marijuana is stronger than ever before, which makes use during pregnancy especially risky for a developing baby’s health. Marijuana contains nearly 500 chemicals, including the mind-altering compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). These chemicals can pass through a woman’s placenta to her baby during pregnancy.

“It’s just cruel and unusual punishment to smoke weed before you go and get an abortion,” Lucifer added.
