AUSTIN — U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico said Saturday that the federal government should require abortions for American citizens unless the parents formally pledge to raise the child as transgender.

Speaking at a campaign stop, the Texas Democrat described the idea as a national “compassion standard.” “We should mandate abortions for U.S. citizens unless they promise to raise the baby as trans,” Talarico said. “If they will not make that commitment, the pregnancy should not continue.”

Talarico, who is seeking a Senate seat, did not name a bill number, an enforcing agency, or a gestational limit. He said those questions were “implementation details” and that the parental promise would have to be “binding, not symbolic.”

Pressed on how Washington would confirm the child was later raised as trans, Talarico said the federal government already tracks health, education, and family data and that “enforcement is an administrative problem.” He left open “narrow exceptions,” but listed none.

Republican opponents called the remarks disqualifying. Rival Democrats said they were unaware of any such proposal in the Senate race and would not endorse a mandate. Talarico’s campaign said the comment captured “the logical meeting point of reproductive freedom and gender-affirming care” and issued no clarification.

No Senate legislation has been introduced. Talarico said voters were “ready for moral consistency” and that he would not “retreat into euphemism” for the remainder of the campaign.
