WASHINGTON — Officials confirmed Tuesday that the recently renovated Reflecting Pool on the National Mall now displays an image of President Donald J. Trump regardless of who stands before it, prompting equal measures of curiosity, admiration, and low-grade existential concern among visitors.

The $18 million refurbishment, completed earlier this year as part of a broader restoration effort, was intended to improve water quality, repair aging infrastructure, and enhance the visitor experience. However, tourists soon began reporting an unusual phenomenon: instead of reflecting their own faces, the pool consistently reflected Trump’s.

“I thought it was just the angle,” said tourist Linda Carver of Des Moines. “Then my husband looked in. Same face. Then a group of school kids looked in. Still Trump. We all took turns. It was always Trump.”

National Park Service officials initially attributed the reports to social media misinformation before conducting their own investigation.

“We tested the pool under a wide range of conditions,” said Park Service engineer David Ng. “Morning, afternoon, cloudy days, clear days, different viewing positions. We even drained and refilled part of the pool. Every observation produced the same result.”

Scientists called in from several federal agencies have thus far failed to identify a cause.

“We’ve ruled out conventional optics, digital projection systems, mass hallucination, and most known laws of physics,” said Dr. Ellen Park, a hydrologist assisting with the inquiry. “At this point we’re simply documenting the phenomenon and trying not to make eye contact with it for too long.”

The reflection itself appears remarkably stable, showing Trump with a neutral expression and a level of hair symmetry not consistently observed in nature.

White House officials dismissed concerns.

“The pool is reflecting greatness,” one senior adviser said. “Frankly, people should be grateful. Most reflecting pools just show you. This one shows leadership.”

Trump addressed the matter briefly during an event nearby.

“I’ve heard about it. Beautiful pool. Tremendous pool,” he said. “People come from all over the world to see the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and now, apparently, my reflection. Very exciting for the tourists.”

Reactions among visitors varied.

Some called the effect “a patriotic miracle,” while others said they now avoid the area after dark, citing an unsettling sense that the pool is “maintaining eye contact.”

At press time, Trump Organization representatives announced plans to market miniature versions of the reflecting pool as “personal success mirrors” for the holiday season.

Early orders are said to be strong.
