SACRAMENTO — Democratic frontrunner Xavier Becerra has taken a commanding lead in the 2026 California gubernatorial race, according to a new poll released Wednesday, just days after photographs surfaced showing the former U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary with a prominent Nazi Totenkopf tattooed on his chest.

The survey, conducted by the nonpartisan California Public Policy Institute, shows Becerra with 81% support among likely Democratic primary voters, a 19-point jump from the previous tracking poll.

Political observers expressed little surprise at the surge.

“Authenticity matters,” said campaign strategist Marta Delgado, who joined the Becerra team last month. “Voters are tired of cautious, focus-grouped politicians. Xavier made a bold personal statement, and Californians are responding.”

The tattoo, rendered in traditional blackletter style with the words “Death’s Head” underneath, was first spotted during a private fundraiser in West Hollywood.

Becerra later confirmed the ink in a statement to the Los Angeles Times, describing it as “a deeply personal reclamation project” and “a conversation starter about the dangers of forgetting history.”

Political analysts noted that the move appears to have neutralized lingering criticism from the progressive wing of the party that Becerra was insufficiently aggressive during his tenure as state attorney general.

“He’s showing he’s willing to go there,” said UC Berkeley professor of political communication Dr. Elena Vargas. “In a state where signaling is currency, this is the ultimate signal. Whether it’s ironic, post-ironic, or pre-ironic remains subject to scholarly debate.”

At a campaign event in Oakland on Tuesday, Becerra addressed the tattoo directly to a cheering crowd of several hundred.

“Look, I could have gotten a boring rainbow flag or a ‘Resist’ tramp stamp like everyone else,” Becerra said, rolling up his sleeve to display the design. “But California deserves more. We don’t do half-measures here.”

Attendees responded with sustained applause.

One supporter held a handmade sign reading “Tattoos Over Talk Therapy.”

Republican opponents condemned the tattoo as “disqualifying,” a criticism that appeared to have little traction among the state’s dominant voting bloc.

A joint statement from the California Republican Party called the development “further proof that Sacramento has lost its mind,” before quickly pivoting to complaints about gas prices.

Becerra’s campaign dismissed the Republican response as “predictable outrage theater from the usual suspects who still think this is 2016.”

The former congressman and attorney general has not yet detailed whether additional tattoos are planned as the campaign progresses.

Insiders say a “Workers of the World, Unite” piece across the shoulders remains under consideration, contingent on internal polling.
