Odd: Joint Base Lindsey Graham Only Has Rear Entrance
WASHINGTON — The Department of War formally dedicated Joint Base Lindsey Graham on Monday, marking what officials called a historic first in American military infrastructure: a major installation deliberately constructed without a front entrance.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth presided over the ceremony, standing before a modest rear gate framed by chain-link fencing and a small brass plaque. “In honor of Lindsey, this will be the only base in history to not have a front entrance,” Hegseth told the assembled guests. “Anyone who enters this hallowed ground must use the rear entrance.”
He delivered the line with a brief wink and nod toward the audience, which included several members of Congress, senior Pentagon officials, and a small contingent of South Carolina National Guard personnel. The crowd responded with polite applause and a few knowing chuckles.
The base, located on a previously undeveloped parcel of federal land, was authorized in the most recent National Defense Authorization Act as a joint training and logistics facility. Architectural plans released by the Army Corps of Engineers confirm the absence of any primary vehicle or pedestrian access point on the installation’s northern, eastern, or western perimeters. All traffic is routed through a single access control point at the southern end of the property.
Base planners said the design was intentional and reflects the senator’s longstanding reputation for accessibility. “We wanted the facility to embody the values of its namesake,” one senior defense official said on background. “Direct, uncomplicated, and open to all who approach from the proper direction.”
Senator Graham did not attend the dedication. A spokesperson said he was “honored by the recognition” and looked forward to visiting the facility “at the appropriate time and through the appropriate entrance.”
The base is expected to reach initial operational capability later this year. Officials confirmed that directional signage will simply read “Rear Entrance Only — All Visitors.”
