Trump Completes First Scouting Patrol in Greenland on Tauntaun
NUUK, Greenland — President Donald J. Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Tuesday completed what the White House described as the “inaugural perimeter assessment ride” of Greenland, traveling by Tauntaun along the island’s coastal ice edge one day after the United States formally assumed security protectorate status over the territory.
The two officials departed from a temporary staging area near Nuuk shortly after 9 a.m. local time, each mounted on a government-procured Tauntaun.
President Trump’s mount, identified by aides as “Patriot One,” carried the president in a red outer garment worn over formal attire.
Secretary Rubio rode a second animal designated “Diplomacy.”
Both creatures were fitted with reinforced saddles and satellite tracking equipment, according to a statement from the newly established Office of Arctic Security Coordination.
The circuit, estimated at approximately 2,600 miles, was conducted at a measured pace and concluded without reported incident after 14 hours.
White House officials characterized the journey as a “symbolic and operational demonstration of American commitment to the territory’s defense perimeter.”
“This was the most successful Tauntaun ride in the history of Tauntaun rides,” President Trump told reporters upon dismounting near the starting point.
“Nobody’s ever done a perimeter like this. Greenland is now under the greatest security arrangement anywhere. The ice is tremendous. The animals are tremendous. Everything is going to be perfect.”
Secretary Rubio offered a more measured assessment.
“The ride allowed us to observe key sections of the coastline and confirm logistical requirements for the protectorate framework,” he said. “We remain focused on practical implementation.”
The security protectorate status was announced late Monday following what the administration described as “mutual discussions” with Greenlandic and Danish authorities.
Under the arrangement, the United States assumes primary responsibility for the island’s external defense, air and maritime domain awareness, and critical infrastructure protection.
Local self-government on domestic matters is to continue, according to the joint communiqué.
No formal transfer of sovereignty has been declared.
Officials emphasized that the Tauntaun circuit was not a territorial claim exercise but a “presence operation.”
Logistics for the ride included prepositioned supply caches of dried rations and thermal blankets at intervals along the route.
Both animals reportedly required periodic rest stops.
A small support convoy of tracked vehicles followed at a distance.
The White House said similar perimeter rides may become an annual tradition.
