Belfast – Following a determined but unsuccessful attempt to saw off a man’s head with a large knife in broad daylight on a Belfast street yesterday, Northern Ireland police and government ministers have moved swiftly to address what they describe as the real danger: potential public overreaction.

The incident, in which a suspect allegedly shouted religious slogans while attempting to separate a pedestrian’s cranium from his torso, has been condemned in the strongest possible terms as “completely unacceptable” by officials, who stressed it does not represent the vast majority of beheaders.

“Communities are understandably concerned,” said a Home Office spokesperson, “but it is vital that we do not allow this isolated event to tarnish the reputation of the many peaceful beheaders living among us. Most beheaders go about their business without incident, contributing enormously to our rich tapestry of cultural practices.”

Local MP Siobhan McAllister echoed the call for calm.

“We must resist the temptation to scapegoat. Beheading, like any other form of cultural expression, has nuances. Not every individual who carries a machete and yells about divine mandates intends harm. Painting them all with the same brush is not only unfair but risks driving moderate beheaders towards more extreme elements.”

Police have increased patrols in the area, primarily to monitor for signs of “Islamophobic rhetoric” or “anti-beheader sentiment” on social media.

A senior PSNI officer confirmed that several residents who expressed discomfort about the incident are already receiving visits from community liaison teams specialising in de-escalation and unconscious bias training.

Meanwhile, the suspect, who remains in custody, is said to be cooperating with authorities and has requested access to prayer facilities and culturally appropriate meals during his detention.

Sources close to the investigation described him as “passionate but frustrated,” adding that his actions should be viewed in the context of broader societal pressures.

A government diversity advisor, speaking on condition of anonymity, warned that knee-jerk responses could have serious consequences.

“We have seen this before. One thwarted beheading leads to hurtful generalisations, which in turn leads to alienation. Before you know it, peaceful beheaders feel they have no choice but to join grooming gangs or protest marches calling for further beheadings. The cycle must be broken.”

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant but not judgmental.

Those who witness suspicious activity involving blades longer than 30cm are encouraged to report it sensitively, ensuring they do not inadvertently contribute to a climate of fear.

As of press time, no motive has been officially confirmed, though counter-terrorism officials continue to insist it would be “unhelpful” to speculate.
