Trump Says Reports of New Hairdo Are a Hoax
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Donald Trump said Sunday that Americans who believe he has changed his hair — specifically, that it is now darker and arranged in dreadlocks — are victims of a hoax, one he described as “one of the biggest, most obvious hair hoaxes in the history of hair.”
“They’re trying to tell you the hair is different,” Trump told reporters. “The hair is not different. The hair is the hair. This is a fake-hair story. Very dishonest people. They do this every time the country is doing well.”
The president delivered the remarks with the hair in question falling in locked strands past his collar. Photographs taken minutes earlier showed a shade several steps darker than the familiar gold. Aides said both observations were “part of the hoax package.”
Asked whether the hoax included the hair on his head at the time of the asking, Trump said that was “exactly how they get you.”
“You look, and then you think you saw something,” he said. “That’s the trick. I didn’t change anything. I never change anything. I’m the most consistent hair in politics. Some of you need to apologize to the hair.”
The White House issued a three-bullet fact sheet:
- The president’s hair has not changed.
- Claims of change are a coordinated narrative.
- Texture is not evidence.
A spokesman added that “lighting, angles, and enemies” had been used in prior hoaxes involving height, crowd size, and the color of water. He said dreadlocks were “a visual rumor.” When a reporter pointed to a lock resting on the president’s shoulder, the spokesman said pointing was “how rumors travel.”
Allies circulated a 2016 photo of Trump with swept blond hair, captioned They said this was fake too. Critics circulated Saturday’s photo and no caption. A cable panel spent eleven minutes debating whether a hoax could be on his head and still be a hoax. The panel did not resolve the matter.
Trump boarded the plane without adjusting the locks, which moved in the jet wash in a way aides later called “consistent with previous hair.”
“Don’t fall for it,” he said. “If I had changed the hair, I would have told you I changed the hair. I would have said it was better. I didn’t say that. Therefore: hoax. Great hair. Same hair. You’re welcome.”
