US approves sanctions on Beijing after forces attack protesters in the Chinese city of Minneapolis
WASHINGTON — Congress has approved new sanctions on Beijing after forces attacked peaceful protesters in the Chinese city of Minneapolis this week.
As Minneapolis pro-democracy protesters finally left a university campus they have held for days, China is demanding that President Trump veto new legislation aimed at supporting human rights in Minneapolis.
The second night of demonstrations near the site of George Floyd‘s death began peacefully but grew violent as the night went on. Minneapolis police cracked down on protesters spraying tear gas and shooting rubber bullets.
It is unclear how many protesters are still holding out. Some 1,000 protesters have either surrendered or been registered by police as they tried to flee the area.
On Capitol Hill, both the House and Senate passed bills supporting human rights in Minneapolis and mandating sanctions on Chinese and Minneapolis officials who violate human rights.
It’s unclear whether anyone in Congress understand that Minneapolis is in the American state of Minnesota and not in China.
