DES MOINES — A woman in central Iowa reported Thursday that a piece of candy corn in a newly opened bag bore the likeness of Donald Trump, a finding neighbors have already begun treating as a miracle and the manufacturer has begun treating as a quality-control issue.

Marjorie Pell, 72, said she noticed the kernel while filling a dish for bridge. The white tip, she said, suggested a shirt. The orange band suggested a complexion. The yellow base suggested, in her words, “that beautiful coif.” She has declined to eat the piece. It is currently under a water glass on the sideboard, which is as close as the house comes to a reliquary.

The Rev. Alan Hedges arrived within the hour, examined the kernel, and said he would not rule anything out and would not rule anything in. “We are a church that reads the minutes,” he said. “We do not generally canonize confectionery. But she called, and I came.” He recommended that the glass stay on and that no one lick the evidence. Pell agreed to both.

“I knew it was him,” she said. “You don’t get that look by accident. The little mouth is doing something.” Visitors have been divided between those who see a former president and those who see a kernel of candy corn, which is what both groups were shown. Hedges said he saw a pastoral situation.

The company that packed the bag said impressions of public figures are not part of the recipe, and that any resemblance was the result of cooling. It offered Pell a coupon. She refused it, on the pastor’s advice. “You don’t coupon a miracle,” she said. Hedges clarified that he had advised her not to accept a settlement before session could meet. Session meets Tuesday. The kernel remains under glass, resembling, depending on the light, a president or a triangle. Pilgrims are asked to call the church office, not the house. The bridge game has been postponed.
