AOC: Republicans are trying to rig elections by only allowing US citizens to vote

In a blatant attempt to rig our elections and silence the voices that truly built this nation, Republicans are once again pushing their extremist agenda of “citizen-only voting.”

This thinly veiled attack on democracy seeks to exclude millions of hardworking members of our communities simply because they lack a piece of paper declaring them citizens of the United States.

Let’s be clear: requiring proof of U.S. citizenship to cast a ballot is not “election integrity.” It is voter suppression dressed up in red tape.

For too long, our democracy has thrived on broad participation. Every person who lives here, works here, pays taxes here, and sends their children to school here has a fundamental right to shape the policies that affect their daily lives. Citizenship is merely a bureaucratic detail that Republicans now weaponize to maintain minority rule.

Consider the facts. Undocumented immigrants, green card holders, and other non-citizen residents contribute enormously to our economy. They pick our food, care for our elderly, and keep our service industry alive. Denying them a voice at the ballot box is not only undemocratic — it is economically self-sabotaging.

True representation means every taxpayer gets representation. That’s not radical; that’s basic fairness.

Republicans claim this is about preventing fraud. Yet they offer no credible evidence that non-citizen voting is a widespread problem. This is the same party that spent years hyping up the “Big Lie” about 2020.

Now they want to “solve” a problem that doesn’t exist by disenfranchising communities of color and immigrant families who overwhelmingly support progressive values. The pattern is obvious: when demographics shift against them, they change the rules instead of changing their policies.

Here in New York and across the country, we have already seen successful models of inclusive voting. Local initiatives allowing non-citizens to participate in municipal elections have strengthened our democracy, not weakened it. Expanding this commonsense approach nationwide would ensure that everyone invested in America’s future has a say.

Instead, Republicans are doubling down on exclusion.

This is not hyperbole. When a party’s platform can no longer win over a majority of actual citizens, the logical next step in their authoritarian playbook is to shrink the electorate. First they come for non-citizens. Then they come for naturalized citizens with the “wrong” paperwork. Then they come for anyone who dares to challenge their power.

The American people deserve better. We must reject this dangerous, anti-democratic crusade. Congress must pass legislation protecting the right to vote for all residents who call this country home. Our democracy depends on it.

The fight continues.
