PHOENIX — Arizona Democratic congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia said Thursday that she had been raped two months ago by two white Nigerian brothers who shouted “this is MAGA country” and shoved enchiladas down her throat, and that seeing them get what they deserve was “what makes America great.”

Police identified the men as Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo. Reporters noted that the pair resembled two men already familiar to the justice system from an earlier case in Chicago, minus the red hats and plus a complexion the department’s sketch artist described as “really, really white, per the victim.” The department released the names anyway. A spokesman said the file was thin and the conclusion was not.

“It was a horrible experience,” Greene-Placentia said. Her spokeswoman, Juicy Smollett, provided the sequence: a struggle, a slogan, a plate of enchiladas, and a location the candidate could not specify. The date was also unavailable. The clothing had been washed. The enchiladas had not been saved. No examination was done the night of the attack, because the attack was reported in the afternoon, eight weeks later, to a newspaper that employs her husband.

Phoenix police said the gaps were frustrating. “If she had called that night, or gone to a hospital, or kept the clothes, or kept an enchilada, we might have more than a narrative,” the spokesman said. “Other than that, it was definitely those Nigerians.” Both men have denied being in Arizona, being white, owning a hat, or carrying Mexican food as a weapon. Their attorney said the slogan was “doing a lot of work,” and the enchiladas the rest.

Alyssa Milano wrote that she believed her. The campaign said the statement had tested well, and that the midterms were close enough for belief to be operational. A local restaurant asked not to be named in connection with the evidence that no longer exists.

In Ohio, Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Amy Acton said she was revising an earlier account of an attempted assassination. “Claiming rape definitely gets more sympathy votes,” she said. “Our campaign chose assassination instead. Looking back, I now recall that I was raped.” Milano believed that one too. Police in both states said they were waiting on a detail that could be checked.
