PARIS — Six French citizens died amid a record heatwave in the capital this week, an event Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has attributed to American air conditioning habits — most notably, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez setting the thermostat in her Washington apartment to 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

City officials described the congresswoman’s decision as a direct contributor to the oppressive conditions now affecting Paris. The victims, aged 47 to 81, succumbed while engaged in typical summer activities such as lingering at sidewalk cafés and expressing measured disapproval of the climate.

“The Americans must understand that their choices have consequences,” Hidalgo told reporters. “Every degree they indulge in Washington is felt here in France. This is not abstract. This is deadly.”

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez addressed the matter in a brief Instagram video filmed inside her now-cool apartment. “Sixty-eight degrees is a perfectly reasonable temperature,” she said, adjusting a reusable water bottle. “We’re facing a climate emergency. I’m simply trying to live sustainably while not melting in my own home. If France is struggling, maybe they should look at their own energy policies.”

French health authorities classified the deaths as heat-related, noting that temperatures had climbed to 87 degrees — conditions they insisted were measurably worsened by the distant but impactful burden of U.S. residential cooling. One of the deceased was reportedly a longtime environmental advocate who had participated in protests against fossil fuel dependency.

The White House offered a cautious response, reiterating support for global climate action. “We hear our allies’ concerns,” a spokesperson said. “Though we would observe that 68 degrees is hardly extravagant by modern standards.”

Parisian officials have advised residents to remain indoors during peak heat, stay hydrated, and avoid proximity to any visible American air conditioning units. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s apartment, sources confirmed, continues to hold steady at 68 degrees, described by her staff as “essential for both personal well-being and ideological consistency.”

Additional tracking of international thermostat accountability is underway.
