Lone Lindsay Clancy Jury Holdout Seen Leaving Courthouse After Trial
PLYMOUTH, Mass. — The Lindsay Clancy murder trial ended Friday in a mistrial after one juror declined to join the other eleven, then walked out of Plymouth Superior Court looking, according to people who collect such observations, like a man who had survived both the evidence and the group chat.
The panel of nine women and three men deliberated more than 38 hours over seven days before sending a note that they could not agree and would not be able to. Defense lawyers said the split was 11–1 and asked the judge to remove the holdout for failing to apply reasonable doubt in the approved direction. Judge William Sullivan declined, a higher court declined, and the case was declared hung.
The holdout was not identified. This did not prevent a full physical description from circulating on the courthouse steps.
Witnesses said he left without a prepared statement, a tote bag of feelings, or an explanation of his journey. He did not pause for the cameras. He did not thank the process for centering him. He put on a jacket, checked that he still had his keys, and walked toward the parking lot as if a verdict were not a personality.
“He looked like he’d rather be wrong alone than right in a circle,” said one spectator who had come for justice and stayed for anthropology.
Court officials emphasized that jurors are not required to be based. They are required to follow the law. The holdout, depending on which lawyer was talking, had either done exactly that or done the opposite with extraordinary calm. The distinction will be litigated again if prosecutors retry the case.
