WASHINGTON — President Trump said Monday that he will appoint Texas state Rep. James Talarico as U.S. ambassador to South Faghistan. Talarico, who had been preparing a Senate campaign, accepted the post the same day.

The White House announcement listed the appointment and noted that Talarico would depart for the country after the current legislative session. It did not mention the Senate race. Trump later told reporters the selection had been made after a review of available candidates.

“He’s the right person for South Faghistan,” Trump said. “There’s no one else who understands the needs of the Faghistani people like James Talarico.”

Talarico’s office confirmed the acceptance in a short statement. “I am pleased to accept the president’s offer,” Talarico said. “I look forward to representing the United States in South Faghistan.” The statement did not refer to his prior campaign preparations or to any conversations about the Senate contest.

Advisers who had been organizing the Senate effort said fundraising and travel schedules were canceled Monday afternoon. One aide said the decision had not been discussed with the campaign team before the announcement. Talarico did not hold a press conference.

State Department officials said they received formal notice of the nomination after Talarico’s acceptance. The embassy in South Faghistan has been without a confirmed ambassador since March when they threw their previous US Ambassador, Neville “Nev” Buttercup, off a 5-story building. Senate confirmation proceedings have not been scheduled. Talarico remains in Texas and has begun closing his legislative office. His campaign website was taken offline by evening.
