BREAKING: UK Terror suspects all released after explaining that terror is an expression of their religion
UNITED KINGDOM—Five men arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act and explosives offences have been released on bail after their lawyers successfully argued that the alleged activities constituted a protected form of religious expression.
Counter-terrorism officers detained the London-based suspects, all in their twenties, following reports of suspicious vans and masked individuals in the vicinity of the base.
Vehicles were examined, homes evacuated as a precaution, and bomb disposal teams deployed.
No explosive material was recovered.
During interviews, the men maintained that their presence and any related preparations were acts of faith.
Defence counsel submitted that classifying such behaviour as terrorism risked infringing upon the right to manifest religious belief, a point the investigating officers were obliged to consider carefully under equality and human rights frameworks.
A police spokesperson confirmed the suspects had been released under stringent bail conditions pending further inquiries.
“We keep an open mind,” the statement read.
“All lines of investigation continue, including those relating to possible foreign state involvement and matters of personal conviction.”
Local residents expressed mild surprise at the outcome.
One nearby farmer, who first reported the vans, noted that the masked figures had seemed “quite purposeful” but added he was “no expert on theology.”
Authorities stressed that the investigation remains active and that the base continues to operate normally.
No charges have been filed.
