CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Moderna (Ticker: MRNA) said Wednesday it is developing a new vaccine designed to reduce the risk of adverse effects associated with its earlier COVID-19 shots.

In a brief statement, the company described the product as a “targeted immune-response stabilizer” intended to address “select post-vaccination outcomes observed in a subset of recipients.” Officials declined to specify which outcomes the new shot is meant to mitigate.

“This is a natural next step in our platform,” a company spokesperson said. “As with all our products, safety and efficacy remain the priority.”

The announcement did not include clinical trial data, a proposed timeline for authorization, or details on dosing. Moderna noted only that the vaccine is “in advanced development” and that further information would be shared “at the appropriate time.”

Public health agencies had not issued formal responses by late Wednesday. Independent researchers said they were awaiting peer-reviewed results before commenting.

Shares of Moderna rose modestly in afternoon trading.
