LOS ANGELES — Actor and public figure Jussie Smollett issued a sharp rebuke Tuesday of Professor Jason Arday, calling the academic “a disgrace to education” and questioning the credibility of his widely reported personal history.

“Who did this man think we are, stupid?” Smollett said in a brief statement released through representatives. “I know a phony when I see one.”

Smollett went on to note parallels between his own early life and the professor’s account. “I too could not speak until I was 12,” he said. “And didn’t learn to read or write until age 18.”

Independent experts later reviewed Smollett’s remarks and compiled a list of his documented achievements. The list, they observed, aligned closely with several of the accomplishments previously attributed to Professor Arday.

Smollett did not respond to the comparison. Sources close to the actor said he left the interview abruptly, citing the need to complete training for 30 upcoming marathons scheduled over the next 30 days.
