Carney Threatens to Move Entire Country of Canada to Europe
OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Monday that Canada intends to leave the continent.
“We are not looking to become a member of the European Union,” Carney told reporters. “We are looking into whether the territory itself can be unfastened and relocated to a more suitable neighborhood. We’re going to move. The soil is coming with us.”
The plan, described by officials as “geologically ambitious,” would involve separating the Canadian landmass along existing survey lines and moving it east. Newfoundland would go first. The rest of the country would follow in sections large enough to keep the provinces recognizable on arrival.
What remains behind would be a clean northern edge and a sudden improvement in the American view.
Brussels has not issued an invitation. It has begun measuring a vacant stretch of ocean between Iceland and Scotland and asking whether a country that arrives by barge still qualifies as a European state. Early legal memos use the phrase “accession by displacement.”
Canadian officials say the land is the point. “You cannot export the temperament without the bedrock,” one senior source said. “The trees are staying attached. We measured.”
Logistical questions are being treated as engineering problems. Niagara Falls would be capped, labeled, and shipped in numbered pieces. The Prairies would travel flat. The Rockies would require their own convoy. A thin corridor would remain connected to the Arctic so that the weather could find its way home.
Carney presented the idea as continuity rather than rupture. “Canada has always been the most European of non-European countries,” he said. “This simply puts the map in agreement with the adjective.”
He added that the country would bring its own healthcare system, its own mosquitoes, and enough topsoil to last the crossing. The United States, he noted, would keep the latitude.
A spokesperson for the European Commission said the bloc was reviewing whether a relocated landmass constituted enlargement or a navigational incident. A spokesperson for the White House said the president was “not losing sleep over a country that has to pack its own ground.”
As of Monday morning, no equipment had appeared on the Shield. Officials said the delay was tidal.
