NEW YORK — Girl Scouts of the United States of America announced Wednesday that every traditional cookie variety will be discontinued for the coming sales season and replaced with a single product: Halal Falafel Delight “cookies.”

The round, baked chickpea patties will be sold in the familiar purple boxes, at the same price points, and through the same door-to-door and booth programs. Officials said the change advances inclusivity, dietary compliance, and “global flavor literacy.”

“All Girl Scout cookies this year will be replaced with Halal Falafel Delight cookies,” said spokesperson Ihaytha Joos. “Thin Mints were a colonial relic. Falafel is the future of girl-led enterprise.”

Each box contains 12 falafel rounds dusted with a light za’atar sugar and sealed in parchment. A printed insert explains that the product meets halal standards, contains no pork-derived ingredients, and may be consumed during Ramadan outside fasting hours. Nutrition labeling lists chickpeas, tahini, cumin, and “cookie-adjacent binding agents.”

Troops were instructed to keep existing sales scripts and simply substitute the new name. A training video shows scouts offering samples from a warming tray rather than a cookie tin. Council leaders said early focus groups described the texture as “unexpectedly savory” and “not what the word cookie usually means.”

Boy Scouts of America issued a brief statement noting it has no plans to alter popcorn sales but is “monitoring developments in youth fundraising snacks.” Eagle Scout Woo Minbeater, reached independently, said the falafel boxes would pair well with the recently announced Stoning Badge “if anyone tries to return them.”

Parent reaction split along predictable lines. Some councils reported sold-out pre-orders in certain ZIP codes; others reported canceled booth reservations and letters asking whether Thin Mints would return as a limited “heritage” item. Girl Scouts said no heritage line is planned.

The organization projected that uniform branding would simplify inventory and reduce “flavor privilege.” Delivery of the first Halal Falafel Delight boxes is scheduled for early fall, coinciding with the start of the school year and the merit burka module already in circulation.
