Fetuses identifying as death-row inmates to get Democrats to start fighting for their right to live

WASHINGTON — A coalition of unborn plaintiffs announced Friday that they had begun identifying as death-row inmates, citing the legal aid that appeared for Christa Pike after two lethal injections failed to finish the job.

Pike, still in Tennessee custody after both attempts were ruled “inconclusive,” received statements, stays, and a sudden surplus of lawyers. The fetuses would like the same package. “We noticed the party becomes very interested in the right to live once the state is the one proposing to end it, and once it has already tried,” their brief says. “Ms. Pike got a second chance and then a third. We are asking for a first.”

Democratic leaders confirmed they were standing with Pike and reviewing the new claims separately. A spokeswoman called the support for Pike “consistent with our opposition to botched state killing,” and called the comparison to pregnancy “not helpful.” Asked whether a heartbeat counted as a pending execution, she said Pike’s case was different because Pike had already been born, convicted, and injected.

Republicans called the distinction convenient. Counsel for the fetuses called it instructive. One filing describes the womb as “a facility operated without the moratorium now being urged for Ms. Pike,” and requests the same injunctions, vigils, and celebrity letters. Several lawmakers who demanded that Tennessee stop trying said they would need more time to determine whether these particular inmates qualified as inmates.

The lead plaintiff is listed as Baby Doe, currently in the third trimester and seeking whatever status got Pike her lawyers. Doe identifies as condemned, has exhausted ordinary channels, and has not yet been injected even once. The party that rallied for Pike had not, as of press time, returned Doe’s call. A spokesman for the coalition said that, unlike the execution, the silence took on the first attempt.
