Gavin Newsom Unveils New Gerrymandered California Map in Response to Texas Redistricting
SACRAMENTO—In what experts are calling “an ambitious and geographically aggressive” countermeasure, California Governor Gavin Newsom today unveiled a newly drawn state congressional map that includes all of Mexico, sources say.
The move comes in response to Texas’s recently approved redistricting plan, which critics say heavily favors Republican candidates. Newsom described his proposal as “a proportional and perfectly reasonable adjustment to ensure fair representation for all Californians, and now, all Mexicans.”
“Texas wants to play games with maps? Fine,” Newsom said at a press conference, pointing to a massive wall-sized map labeled California 2.0. “We’ll balance the scales by expanding our borders until our districts represent the diverse voices of San Diego, San Francisco, and Sinaloa.”
Under the new plan, California’s congressional delegation would expand from 52 seats to approximately 1,230, with most new districts stretching from Los Angeles County to the Yucatán Peninsula. Early projections suggest Democrats would win 1,228 of those seats, with two toss-ups in Baja California.
Legal scholars have expressed skepticism over the map’s constitutionality, international boundaries, and basic cartographic coherence. Newsom dismissed those concerns, stating, “If Texas can draw districts shaped like snakes eating their own tails, I can draw California however I want. Besides, we already share a love for avocados — this just makes it official.”
The Mexican government has not yet commented, although one senior official reportedly sighed and said, “Well, it’s still better than being part of Texas.”
