NFL relieved that no racist or sexual ‘trash talk’ has ever been used by players
Following revelations of inappropriate remarks in emails by former Raiders’ coach Jon Gruden, the NFL has conducted an investigation into “trash talk” between players during NFL games from the past several seasons.
According to NFL officials, review of game transcripts has not identified the use of any racist or sexually abusive language.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated, “We are confident that there has never been any inappropriate language related to race, sexual preference, or gender identity uttered between opposing players across the line of scrimmage in NFL football games. Any such behavior would be offensive, unsportsman, er, I mean ‘unsportsperson-like’ and a violation of NFL policies. We remain vigilant in ongoing review of game transcripts.”
It remains unclear how such “trash talk” has been monitored, as game transcripts seem limited to commentary between the media broadcasters.
Goodell further stated that the NFL encourages any players to come forward to report anything “mean” or “insensitive” that opposing players may have ever said to them on or off the field.
